JUNGLE RIVER EXPEDITION
8 Days / 7 Nights

The Rio Patuca National Park was recently set up to keep intact one of the most valuable tracts of primary rainforest and indigenous culture. The eight night Rio Patuca trip is ideal for those who yearn for more adventure and want an intimate experience with nature and native cultures.

THE TOUR
We travel by 4-wheel drive Jeeps, foot, mule, cayuko (dugout canoe) and bush plane. The Rio Cuaymel and the Patuca River are the highways through this remote area populated by Sumo and Misquito Indians. Thatch roofed huts and open air platform camps with mosquito netting and bedrolls are our base for hiking and wildlife observation along the way.
In small groups and with an experienced native guide we learn about the lush tropical jungle and its wildlife. Our close contact to the indigenous people - we share the traditional meals prepared by local people - give insight into the community life of the oldest civilisation of the region.

ROUTING 

Day 1:Arrival in La Ceiba, a lively town on the Caribbean coast.  

Day 2: Early in the morning we take a winding dirt road over the Agalta Mountains to Olancho. After lunch at Catacamas we head for the Patuca mountains and spend the night in our open air camp. 

Day 3: we journey down the river Cuaymel in a dugout canoe to our second camp surrounded by dense jungle. 

Day 4: Here we spend a full day with observation of wildlife and rainforest. 

Day 5: Downstream in our cayuko (dugout canoe) until we hit the Patuca River. Overnight in Krautara - a village of the Sumo or Tawaka community. 

Day 6: Floating all day on the majestic Patuca we reach the Miskito village of Wampusirpi. 

Day 7: A full day observing everyday life of a Misquito village. 

Day 8: Flight in a bush plane from Wampusirpi via Brus Laguna to La Ceiba on the Caribbean coast. End of the tour.
